Physical maps are useful, though you won’t necessarily know where you are on the map. GPS coordinates from a mobile app are of limited value in describing where you are in relationship to someone or somewhere else. Why bother with mile markers when you have mobile apps, GPS coordinates, physical maps, cell phones? Long stretches of Highway 1 in Big Sur have neither cross-streets nor building addresses as points of reference. Mile marker signs on Highway 1 in Monterey County are white vertical rectangles, placed every mile, on both sides of the road, with a numerical indicator of how many miles north you are located from the border with San Luis Obispo County to the south.
